Orthopaedic Surgeon

Health services Government Contractor is currently seeking a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon with the following required qualifications to work at a Military Community Hospital in Fort Polk, La.:

  • License/registration: Must have and maintain a current, active, valid, unrestricted state license to practice medicine in one of the 50 states in the United States, or the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the US Virgin Islands as required to obtain or renew a DEA registration number under the then effective DEA rules. License must correspond to DEA registration number.
  • Graduates of foreign medical schools are required to possess both a medical license and other certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or 4th Pathway.
  • Must have a minimum of one year of experience within the last three years routinely practicing as a physician in rendering orthopedic care.
  • Must be eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons or the American Osteopathic Surgeons.
  • Must have and maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification by way of an American Heart Association sponsored or endorsed training program.
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English fluently to be able to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare providers.
  • Shall be required to meet Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
  • Shall be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must pass required criminal history and background check as well as complete the SF 85-P (“Questionnaire For Public Trust Positions”). Current security clearance and CAC holders are preferred.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of military culture, customs, and procedures including military profiles and retention of Active Duty personnel.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITES:

 Duties shall consist of but are not limited to the following:

 Must be able to perform the full range of general medical services consistent with their training and experience to adequately diagnose and treat acute diseases and injuries to include but not limited to:

  • Skin Pulmonary System
  • Head Gastrointestinal System
  • Eyes Musculoskeletal System
  • Ears Genitourinary System
  • Nose Reproductive System
  • Throat Lymphatic System
  • Neck Central Nervous System
  • Cardiovascular System Endocrine System

Special emphasis is placed on the musculoskeletal system. The orthopedic surgeon is expected to perform independently and to have consultative responsibility at high level of professional competence.

The surgeon is responsible for maintenance of the highest standards of professional care in the outpatient management of orthopedic patients served by the facility.

Surgeon operatively manages upper and lower extremity orthopedic fracture surgical cases; manages extremely difficult outpatient, inpatient, and operative orthopedic cases. The surgeon provides immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care.

Provides professional advice to medical staff upon request, in emergency situations, with regard to professional management of patients being treated. The Orthopedic Surgeon performs comprehensive and problem focused histories and physical examinations. Examines, diagnoses, and treat or prescribe course of treatment and surgery for patients with disorders, malformations, diseases and injuries to the musculoskeletal system, and perform required surgery.

Conduct and supervise direct patient care, and plan and execute disease prevention and health promotion programs. Provides follow-up care on patients previously seen in the clinic.

Applies the Medical Fitness and Profiling Standard. Evaluates Soldiers for retention and admission in accordance with Chapters 2 and 33 of AR 40-501.

Become familiar with the hospital formulary. Prescribe pharmaceuticals according to the availability of drugs listed therein.

In the event of emergencies (for patients with life-threatening situations), performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS).

Interprets and correlates laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and correlates subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis. Formulates treatment plans for orthopedic problems within the scope of practice.

Implement therapeutic interventions for specific conditions when appropriate. Exercises judgment on problems requiring consultations, referrals, or evaluations by the supervising orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals.

Orders, collects, and performs appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures and studies including, but not limited to, blood and tissue specimens. Orders and performs diagnostic studies such as, but not limited to, EMGs, electrocardiograms, compartment pressure measurements, and examinations including special x-ray examinations, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and bone scans.

Writes or dictates physical profiles, medical evaluation boards, fitness for duty evaluations, or other related documentation appropriately.

Performs surgeries on musculoskeletal within the standard of Orthopedic services to include trauma, hand, with an emphasis on sports injuries.

Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to, joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points, and bursa, as well as brace, cast and splint applications.

Orders, prescribes, dispenses, and administers medication, orthoses, orthotics, braces and other orthopedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation.

Conducts hospital rounds, writes orders, and takes calls. Evaluates and clarifies clinical conditions, formulates and implements treatment or therapeutic plans for hospitalized patients, dictates discharge summaries, histories and physicals. Evaluates, screens, and counsels patients on health maintenance and promotes utilization of community resources.

Designs, conducts and participates in research studies. Manages databases and performs quality assurance. Serves as a representative or delegate of the local Orthopedic Service at meetings, boards, or councils as needed.

Establishes criteria for obtaining follow-up x-rays of the injury prior to evaluation by the Health Care Provider so that health care is not compromised.

Renders consultative opinions for physicians, physician assistants, and other health care providers in outlying clinics as necessary.

Refers patients with complex or unresolved conditions to specialty/subspecialty clinics as applicable.

Provides telephone consultation with primary care providers regarding management of orthopedic conditions.

Maintains a thorough working knowledge of the performance improvement process outlined by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations and stays current with their guidelines.

SCHEDULE:

Approximately forty (40) hours per week. Overtime is not authorized. As a general guideline, the hours shall include but are not limited to 0800 to 1630 hours, Monday through Friday.

On Call/After Duty Response Time: shall perform on-call duty during evenings, weekends, and legal federal holidays as scheduled by the Department Chief. The physician shall share the on-call services with government military/civilian physicians as determined by each Medical Treatment Facility (MTF.) While on call, the contract physician shall respond to all pages within 10 minutes and be available to be physically summoned to the hospital within 30 minutes of receipt of call from any member of the MTF clinical staff. The normal on-call coverage hours from Monday through Sunday are between the hours of 0800 and 0800 (24 hour call). During call, the contract physician shall be responsible for, but not limited to: inpatient consults, emergency consultations, and hospital transfers.
