 GRANT GUIDELINES REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

OBJECTIVE: The Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), under the auspices of its Research Committee, is offering up to $20,000 to support pre-clinical or clinical research investigating musculoskeletal conditions or injuries of relevance to the warfighter and the Society.  There will be one Member Research Grant submission cycle during the year, in a letter of intent (LOI) and invitation-only full proposal format.

TIMELINE: Letter of intent process opens in June with an August 1, 2023 (2359 EST) deadline. Full Proposal invitation notifications emailed in August. Full proposal submittal (by invitation only) opens in August with an September 30, 2023 October 20, 2023 (2359 EST) deadline. Awards notifications announced at the annual SOMOS meeting in December.

RESEARCH PRIORITIES: The mission of the Society is to “advance the practice of military and disaster musculoskeletal medicine through leadership, education, research, and collaboration”. As such, any grant applications to be considered must have clear and demonstrable relevance to the mission of the Society.

FUNDING: This program provides a one-time award, per application, of up to $20,000 to be disbursed over a 24 month period. The start date of the funded project will be March 1, 2024 and should be completed within a 24 month period. No-cost extensions may be requested.

ELIGIBILITY: The Principal Investigator (PI) must be a SOMOS member, in good standing. Residents and Attending Faculty, or academic equivalents (e.g., PhD) within 5 years of completion of training at the time of application are eligible to serve as the PI.  There is no requirement for the PI to have obtained prior peer-reviewed funding.  Principal Investigators who have previously served as a PI on Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program grants are not eligible. The research must be conducted in North America.
